About the FSTM
The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.
The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) at the University of Luxembourg contributes multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences and Medicine.
Through its dual mission of teaching and research, the FSTM seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge and train new generations of responsible citizens in order to better understand, explain and advance society and environment we live in.
The Department of Engineering (DoE) is interdisciplinary and active in the classical domains of civil, electrical, mechanical, and computational engineering. The focus of research is on the development of technological solutions, the sustainable and economical use of all kinds of resources, the offer of competences for the technological requirements of Luxembourg and the Greater Region industrial and public actors. Special emphasis is given to numerical simulation to reduce the required experimental effort, but the validation of the models on laboratory setup will remain an essential asset.
Your role
The Department of Engineering (DoE) seeks to hire a Research Support Engineer, specialist in Electrical Engineering and Embedded Systems, to integrate the Technical Support Unit (TSU). This position will primarily support the DoE Research Area "Energy Technology & Electrical Engineering", while also taking on an important management role across the DoE, under the supervision of the Technical Support Unit (TSU) Team Leader.
TSU Management
- Identify and allocate necessary TSU resources (human, material) to projects based on priorities and deadlines
- Assess team capacity and workload to ensure balanced distribution of tasks
- Continuously evaluate and optimise resource utilisation to improve efficiency
Laboratory Management
- Oversee and coordinate the technical support of research and education activities
- Implement and reinforce safety protocols to maintain a safe working environment, in collaboration with the Safety Officer
- Ensure all laboratory equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and functioning optimally
- Maintain accurate and organised records of experimental data, results, and lab activities
Embedded Systems & Applied Computing
- Embedded programming: C/C++, Python, and ideally some familiarity with RTOS
- Integration of sensors and actuators, serial communication (UART, SPI, I2C), and industrial communication protocols (CAN, Modbus...)
Support for Experimentation and Prototyping
- Setup of experimental platforms involving sensors, instrumentation, and physical measurements
- Involvement in the design, wiring, commissioning, and troubleshooting of systems
- Collaborate closely with PhD students, postdocs, and researchers
Your profile
- Master''s degree (or equivalent, Bac+5) in electrical engineering, applied electronics, cyber-physical systems, embedded systems, or related fields
- Knowledge of electrical circuits, energy conversion, machines, power quality, and distribution
- Experience in designing and integrating electrotechnical test benches
- Proficiency in microcontroller architectures (STM32, ESP32, Arduino, etc.)
- Proficiency in simulation tools such as LTSpice, Matlab/Simulink, PSIM, or similar
- Knowledge in real-time systems and embedded signal processing
- At least 10 years of experience in a technical or applied research environment
- Full Proficiency in English; Knowledge of French or German would be an asset
