Role Purpose
Our Belgian Risk & Compliance team plays a critical role in ensuring the Belgian firm adheres to local legal and regulatory frameworks. This is especially important given the complex legal landscape in which the international firm operates. The teams responsibilities are essential to protect the firm, its reputation, and operational success.
As the Head of Risk & Compliance, you will:
- Report to the Managing Partner of A&O Shearman Belgium, the Global Head of Risk & Compliance, and the Belgian Partner Group;
- Be part of the Belgian Management team.
Role and Responsibilities
The Belgian Head of Risk & Compliance is responsible for:
- Implementing global risk policies and monitoring specific Belgian risks and related policies and processes;
- Claims management, interacting with A&O Shearman''s global risk management team, brokers, and insurers;
- Assisting the Belgian Partner Group with risk management matters;
- Following up and monitoring applicable Belgian legal, regulatory, and ethical rules;
- Drafting and updating the Belgian Risk Register and policies;
- Managing templates of Belgian engagement letters and assisting with Belgian law queries;
- Implementing relevant (EU) regulations (e.g., Whistleblowing, CSRD/CSDDD, DAC 6, GDPR);
- Reviewing supplier contracts;
- Reporting on annual compliance, including the use of Third Party Accounts;
- Providing training on risk management and compliance to partners, lawyers, and staff;
- Collaborating with the Global Risk & Compliance Team on international projects and surveys, providing Belgian input;
- Assisting the Global team with queries related to Belgian legal and regulatory rules and ensuring policies are up-to-date from a Belgian perspective.
Who We Are Looking For
- You hold a Master in Law and have at least 5 years of experience in Risk & Compliance Management;
- You are fluent in English, French, and Dutch (both written and spoken);
- You possess strong communication skills, capable of articulating clearly in complex environments;
- You are creative, flexible, entrepreneurial, and possess good communication skills;
- You have strong interpersonal and networking skills to maintain relationships with multiple stakeholders;
- You are self-motivated, well-organized, and able to work independently;
- You demonstrate excellent organizational and planning skills, are process-driven, and attentive to detail.
