Role purpose:The Network Development Engineer is accountable for designing, deploying, and supporting network fabric and systems. This role requires a deep understanding of networking protocols and programming skills to support automation in a production environment. Responsibilities include detailed network solutions considering room location, TOR, raw row, hardware, stock allocation, subnets, VLANs, and capacity and performance management.The engineer contributes to architecture design, working closely with Network Architects, and ensures the availability of supporting business infrastructure within Data Centers or external providers. They participate in network lifecycle management, including builds and upgrades, collaborating with project managers to meet milestones and deliverables. The role involves developing and executing network changes using existing procedures, serving as a technical lead, and contributing to product roadmaps.As part of an Agile team, the engineer acts as the Technical Product Owner for a Network Engineering product line, providing vision and guidance throughout the development lifecycle. They manage stakeholders, align team efforts to deliver valuable features, and support the creation of user stories, ensuring alignment with business outcomes. The role includes providing third-level support for escalated incidents, leading root cause analyses, and collaborating on automation and support tooling development.The engineer is responsible for mapping operational capacity, availability, and performance against SLAs and supporting release planning and backlog management.Key accountabilities and decision ownership:Collaborate with cloud providers to forecast and optimize capacity and performanceAssess impact of user and technical stories on architecture and processesDesign and implement supporting platform, infrastructure, and toolingMonitor and maintain platform and network performance, capacity, and availabilityDefine product vision, strategy, and growth opportunitiesPrioritize and manage product backlog and user storiesWork with UI/UX designers on customer journeysMitigate impediments and support team delivery goalsAnalyze features and ensure understanding of business valueEnsure detailed and executable user stories and acceptance testsReport on delivery risks and opportunitiesKey performance indicators:Solution/Platform/Infrastructure/Network availabilityProduct performance and developmentPlatform/network-related P1 incidentsCore competencies, knowledge, and experience:Network management and design in large-scale data centers, e.g., Cisco ACI, SDN technologiesNetworking protocols such as TCP/IP, VPN, DNS, DHCP, SSLAutomation and configuration tools like Puppet, Chef, AnsibleExperience with cloud IaaS/PaaS platforms (OpenStack, AWS, Azure) and programming languages (Python, Java, etc.)Understanding of software development processes and supporting systemsUser story and backlog managementAcceptance test design and validationCustomer experience design and data-driven decision makingUnderstanding of business capabilities and organizational goalsMust have technical/professional qualifications:Degree or certification in Computer Science or related field7+ years of experience in network infrastructure design, deployment, or administrationExperience with virtualization, SDN, SD-WAN, NSX, cloud networksFamiliarity with agile methodologies, DevOps, and CI/CDKnowledge of IT management best practices such as ITILExperience in the Telecommunications industry preferredWho we areVodafone is a leading telecommunications provider in Europe and Africa, investing in new technologies to improve lives worldwide.
