What Youll Do

This role will be responsible for assisting General Motors monitor and meaningfully impact the development of policies and regulations relevant to the automotive sector in the European Union, in-line with GMs Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion, and Zero Crashes ambitions.

Crucial to this role will be developing contacts across all relevant stakeholders in the EU, with a special focus on key Departments, Industry Associations, and relevant Government officials. Reporting to the Director Government Relations in Zurich (Switzerland), and working with Public Policy colleagues in North America, there will be a key focus on supporting business growth in the EU by ensuring the business is kept up to date and afforded the opportunity to contribute to the development of impactful policies and regulations.

Fundamental to being successful in this position will be assisting to increase awareness of GMs activities and plans in the EU, including our drive to be a leader in meeting the EUs CO2 reduction ambitions, the introduction of cutting-edge automotive technology, and our non-traditional start-up transport company approach.

Head of EU Affairs Responsibilities

1. Develop contacts across all relevant European Commission Directorate Generals and European Parliament Committees that will allow easy access to officials as and when required.
2. Increase visibility of GM in Brussels across all relevant stakeholder groups by developing opportunities for GM leaders to share our vision.
3. Ensure communication flow between GM and stakeholders.
4. Keep a stakeholder map of relevant officials that includes European Union Officials, Embassies, the Auto Industry, and NGOs.
5. Keep on top of all public policy developments within the EU, ensuring the business is both informed and given the opportunity to react or respond as appropriate.
6. Work with associations (AAPC, ACEA, etc.) in a coordinated approach on highlighted issues where possible.
7. Assist wherever possible in reducing cost and complexity to GM by working for flexible certification systems and acceptance of alternative standards that meet requirements.
8. Specifically ensure that GM is aware of the developments of policies, standards, and regulations, in areas that will be crucial to the development of the auto industry such as: Data Privacy and Information Technology Systems; the development of ADAS standards; standards that relate to Battery Electric Vehicles; the development of a circular economy; and environmental standards including emissions criteria, CO2 standards, and Substances of Concern.
9. Developing a deep relationship with relevant representatives of the U.S. Government in Brussels.
10. Monitor all relevant developments and assist GM with outreach on all matters to do with U.S. - EU trade relations.
11. Monitor the development of technical regulations in Europe, providing a constant flow of information and reporting to GM Global Public Policy and all other relevant GM functions, Committees, and Working Groups, to support the development of Most Likely Scenarios that anticipate yet to be finalized regulations.
