Freelance Opportunity Senior API Developer with Geospatial Experience (Brussels/Remote)
Location: Brussels (hybrid model 1 day on-site per week)

We are currently engaged on a strategic digital transformation project for a public sector organisation, and are looking for a Senior API Developer with experience in geospatial technologies. This role focuses on modernising legacy geographic data services through the design and implementation of standards-compliant APIs.
This is a freelance role with a long-term outlook, offering a mostly remote setup with limited on-site requirements in Brussels.
Role Responsibilities
- Develop modern, scalable APIs to replace legacy geospatial data services (e.g., WMS/WFS)
- Ensure compliance with public sector API guidelines and best practices
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior developers within the team
- Implement robust security, access control, and performance tuning measures
- Collaborate with technical stakeholders to enhance system architecture and data access layers
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven expertise in API design and development (RESTful APIs, backend services)
- Experience or understanding of geospatial data formats and services
- Familiarity with technologies such as GeoServer, WMS/WFS, Tomcat, and Java is beneficial
- Awareness of public geodata portals and accessibility standards
- Strong knowledge of API security and authentication strategies
- Comfortable working in either Dutch or French
