We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Energy Trader to join our dynamic team in Amsterdam. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in either the physical power market or paper commodities, with a proven track record of generating strong annual returns relative to risk. Prior experience on a proprietary or speculative trading desk is essential, as this role demands a deep understanding of risk-taking, market dynamics, and profit optimization. Key Responsibilities
Trading Strategy Execution
- Execute and optimize trading strategies in physical power markets or paper commodities to achieve profitability.
- Ensure strategies are robust and adaptable to changing market conditions.
Market Analysis
- Continuously monitor global energy trends, supply and demand dynamics, regulatory developments, and macroeconomic factors to inform trading decisions.
Risk Management
- Assess and manage trading risks while maintaining annual returns at least 45 times the Value at Risk (VaR).
- Ensure alignment with the companys risk appetite and policies.
Market Intelligence
- Stay informed about market developments, competitor activities, and industry news to identify opportunities and mitigate risks.
Systematic Strategy Development
- Collaborate with quantitative analysts to design, test, and refine systematic trading strategies to enhance the firms trading portfolio.
Performance Analysis
- Conduct detailed financial analysis, including monitoring profit and loss, margins, and trading positions to ensure optimal performance and transparency.
Compliance and Reporting
- Ensure full compliance with trading regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
- Prepare regular reports for senior management with insights and actionable recommendations.
Relationship Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including market participants, suppliers, and counterparties, to enhance trading opportunities.
Qualifications and Experience
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years in energy trading with a demonstrated track record in physical power markets or paper commodities.
Proven Track Record
- Ability to demonstrate a systematic or discretionary trading strategy that has consistently generated annual returns exceeding 45 times VaR, with at least one year of validated performance.
Prop/Spec Desk Experience
- Prior experience on a proprietary or speculative trading desk is essential.
Market Knowledge
- Deep understanding of the global energy market, pricing mechanisms, and trading practices, including both physical and financial markets.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in using trading platforms, risk management tools, and data analytics to support decision-making.
Quantitative Collaboration
- Ability to contribute to systematic trading model development in collaboration with quantitative analysts.
Experience Bonus
- Experience in creating speculative positions based on a companys power or gas portfolio is a strong advantage.
