PRODUCT ENGINEER - LEUVEN (BELGIUM) - PERMANENT POSITION
Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Product Engineer specializing in the industrialization of electronic products to join our dynamic manufacturing team. In this pivotal role, you will serve as the essential bridge between product development and manufacturing, ensuring that innovative electronic designs transition smoothly from the prototype stage to full-scale production.
Your role will involve working closely with R&D, design engineering, quality assurance, and manufacturing teams to translate complex product designs into manufacturable, reliable, and cost-effective solutions. You will be responsible for identifying and mitigating potential production challenges early in the product lifecycle through rigorous design reviews and cross-functional collaboration.
By applying design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for testability (DFT) principles, you will help optimize products for high-volume manufacturing while maintaining quality and performance standards.
This position demands a strong technical background in electronics manufacturing processes such as PCB assembly, surface-mount technology (SMT), through-hole soldering, and automated testing. You will lead pilot builds, support first article inspections, and troubleshoot manufacturing issues to ensure product integrity and consistency. Your proactive approach will drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on yield enhancement, cycle time reduction, and cost optimization.
In addition to technical expertise, excellent communication and project management skills are crucial, as you will coordinate cross-functional teams and work with suppliers to ensure component quality and availability. Your contributions will be vital to accelerating time-to-market, reducing production risks, and delivering high-quality electronic products that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to impact the full product lifecycle and work at the forefront of electronics manufacturing innovation in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the industrialization process for new electronic products, ensuring seamless transition from design to volume manufacturing.
- Conduct detailed reviews of product designs, bills of materials (BOMs), and manufacturing documentation to identify and address potential production risks.
- Collaborate with design engineering to apply design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for testability (DFT) principles that improve product assembly and testing.
- Develop, validate, and optimize manufacturing processes, assembly procedures, and test protocols in partnership with production teams.
- Manage pilot builds and first article inspections (FAI) to validate process readiness and product quality.
- Troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing issues related to design, components, and processes to maintain production flow and product quality.
- Work closely with procurement and suppliers to ensure component compliance, availability, and quality standards.
- Drive continuous improvement projects focused on increasing yield, reducing cycle times, and minimizing production costs.
- Document engineering changes, process improvements, and quality metrics to maintain traceability and regulatory compliance.
- Act as the technical liaison between R&D, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams throughout the product lifecycle.
- Train and support production personnel on new product introductions and updated manufacturing techniques.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in product engineering, manufacturing engineering, or industrialization within the electronics industry.
- Strong knowledge of PCB assembly processes, SMT and through-hole soldering, testing methodologies, and electronic components.
- Experience implementing design for manufacturability (DFM), design for testability (DFT), and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).
- Familiarity with manufacturing process development, process control, and quality management systems such as ISO 9001 and IPC standards.
- Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex production issues effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency with CAD tools, product lifecycle management (PLM) software, and manufacturing execution systems (MES) is a
