The Online College (OLC) Academic Advisor I position is part of a comprehensive student support system, developed specifically with the working adult in mind. After an intensive three to four week training period, the entry-level full-time academic advisor works closely with a caseload of approximately 300 distance education students in order to help them achieve their personal and professional educational goals. The advisor is a source of information for students by being available to answer questions, directing students to resources, as well as providing students with information on course availability, content, and appropriateness. The advisor is a coach and mentor assisting them in the development of realistic expectations for their program and course completion, and positioning students for success by providing them with personal and professional support at a distance. The advisor is a motivator contacting students proactively to urge course and program completion goals, working with students to develop and track academic and personal goals and supporting those goals by directing students to available student support services. The advisor is an advocate, working within the institutional system, trying to modify barriers that impede student progress and offering the best and most appropriate solution to student setbacks. The Academic Advisor I works closely with the Academic Advisor III (Trainer) for one full year.**Education and Experience**:Minimum of a Bachelor''s Degree. Minimum of one year experience in counseling/advising preferred. Experience in the area of adult education.**Supervision and Scheduling Demands**:Works with mnimal supervision, but is assigned to work with a Training Advisor III during first year. Is expected to be self-directed and follow standard operating procedures. Job involves working an occasional weekend.**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities**:Basic knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Word. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely (written and verbal communication). Demonstrate good active listening skills. Ability to relate to and interact with adult learners and college administration, to speak and write clearly and concisely, to use computer and internet technology and to prioritize multiple demands. Good reasoning and problem-solving skills in order to make informed decisions and recommendations.
