A fully funded 3-year Ph.D. position in NetworkOrchestration for Metaverse Applications in 6G Networks within theDepartment of Information Engineering at the University of Pisa(Italy) is sponsored by the Ubiquitous Internet (UI) research groupof IIT-CNR. We are looking for a highly motivated Ph.D. candidatewith a strong academic background to join our research team andwork on this Ph.D. topic under our supervision. Workplace: Pisa, Italy For any questions,please contact Raffaele Bruno, raffaele.bruno@iit.cnr.it BackgroundEmerging cross-reality (XR) applications, which enables interactionand collaboration among users in a virtual environment, arecharacterised by unprecedented requirements for Quality ofExperience (QoE), largely exceeding those attainable in the currentnetworks . Many relevant enabling technologies, including future 6Gcommunication services, AI, edge computing, real-time rendering -promise to tackle such QoE requirements offering Metaverse serviceswith exceptional reliability in dynamic and complex networkenvironments. However, as system complexity escalates, it ispivotal to design orchestration methods to jointly optimizecommunication, networking and computation resources proactively andadaptively throughout the entire end-to-end network architecture inalignment with the target KPIs. Topic description The researchchallenges addressed by this PhD include (but are not limited to)the design of: - new AI/ML models and optimisation solutions fornetwork orchestrators and controllers in future 6G networks toprovide deterministic performance to Metaverse services overheterogeneous domains and complex network scenarios, also without aglobally synchronised system; - novel solutions for in-networkcomputing to reduce latency in Metaverse services by optimizing theplacement of rendering tasks among end-user devices, servers andthe network; Candidate profile The candidate must have (or be aboutto obtain) a Masters degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science,Computer Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or a closelyrelated field. An excellent academic record is required, withoutstanding marks in subjects such as networking, optimization, andartificial intelligence. Technical Skills The following skills arean advantage for the candidate: - Proficiency in programming(Python, C++, or similar languages). Experience with real-timetools for 3D, AR, and VR development is preferable but notrequired. - Understanding of real-time communications and Qualityof Service (QoS) requirements for immersive applications. -Knowledge of general networking principles and NFV (NetworkFunction Virtualization). - Experience or familiarity with ML/AItechniques applied to networking.
